During the shooting of Star Trek The Original Series, bits and pieces of episodic footage were left on the cutting room floor and later preserved in film canisters by creator Gene Roddenberry and his estate. Having been found, the footage has now been painstakingly catalogued, transferred, analysed, and pieced together along with never-before-seen footage from the production to offer fans what is a real must have collectors item - STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES – THE RODDENBERRY VAULT.
Released on Blu-ray on 5th December 2016 the three-disc edition Blu-ray has been put together to mark the show's 50th anniversary. Also included are twelve classic episodes chosen for their relevance to the Vault materials - presented in 1080p High Definition with both DTS 7.1 Master Audio as well as newly restored original Mono - with three of those episodes featuring exclusive audio commentaries recorded specifically for the release. If that wasn't enough there is also swathes of interviews with original members of the cast and crew including William Shatner, Dorothy Fontana, David Gerrold, and with famous fans such as The Big Bang creator Bill Prady, and The Simpson's writer David Mirkin.
The release includes three new documentaries exploring the 'making of' what is one of TV and pop culture's most legendary and beloved series. In Inside The Roddenberry Vault Rod Roddenberry talks about the discovery of his father's long lost film reels and outtakes, and features interviews with Star Trek alumni and historians who discuss the cultural important of the show and its last legacy. Star Trek: Revisiting A Classic focuses on the original influences and inspirations on the show, and provides a look at what life was like on set. Strange New Worlds: Visualizing the Fantastic is an in depth look at the creative and design process which went in to sci-fi's most recognisable and ingenious creations - the spaceships, transports, and classic Star Trek visuals.
