Neill Blomkamp and Sharlto Copley have been on quite the rollercoaster ride over the past few years. Back in 2009, they created District 9, which was a surprise hit and became a modern science fiction classic. Everyone was hotly anticipating what the South African director and actor would do next. Unfortunately, the answer to that question is Elysium, which was just...ok. And honestly, ok in this case is a more damning indictment than bad. Bad at least suggests that they tried something different and failed, but Elysium is just such a generic science fiction movie that it's hard not to be seriously disappointed. But we're looking to their next collaboration to help them get their groove back. That's Chappie. Details are scarce about the film so far, but we know that it revolves around a robot that becomes the adopted son of two criminals when they steal him immediately following his creation. With Copley in the starring role of Chappie, the film also features Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, and Dev Patel. If nothing else, it sounds interesting, and we know how adept Blomkamp has proven to be at imbuing non-human characters with a surprising amount of humanity.
