Unlike Tom Hanks and Drew Barrymore, who both came to widespread attention with a mainstream movie, Jennifer Lawrence followed the same route as Joseph Gordon-Levitt and made her name in independent cinema with the 2010 drama Winter's Bone. Methamphetamines and absent fathers might not sound like the subject matter for the most fun movie of all time, and Winter's Bone is a harrowing but superbly crafted slice of miserablism. Lawrence earned herself an Academy Award for Best Actress nomination and hasn't looked back - she's one of the hottest stars in Hollywood working today. Co-star John Hawkes has continued to work in independent cinema and is well known for his performance as Sol Star on the underrated HBO series Deadwood, but his career trajectory has certainly fallen considerably shorter than Lawrence's.
