10 Amazing Sci-Fi Movies You Need To Stop Sleeping On
10. The Vast Of Night
Released in 2019, The Vast of Night is the most recent film to make its way onto this list. The directorial debut of Andrew Patterson (who also financed the whole shoot himself), this is a film which hasn't quite reached the audience it deserves.
Set in the 1950s, the film follows a radio DJ (Jake Horowitz) and a switchboard operator (Sierra McCormick) as they attempt to find the source of a bizarre audio frequency which has descended upon their small town. After coming across a series of ambiguous radio signals, phone calls and secret tapes, the pair begin a life-changing hunt for answers.
Despite being set in the '50s, The Vast of Night manages to maintain a strong link to the sci-fi genre, whilst also ensuring it packs as much eerie mystery and compelling character arcs as possible. And thanks to some astounding sound editing and mysterious plot twists, it is also a brilliantly atmospheric and stylish thrill-ride which promises big things for its first-time director.
