10 Amazing Spider-Man 2 Script Changes That Drastically Changed The Film

2. A More Melodramatic Death For Gwen Stacy

The actual death of Gwen Stacy was something comic book readers saw coming from miles away, but the way Marc Webb shot it made up for our prior knowledge to her demise. The slow motion sequence of Peter's web inching ever closer to her, barely missing falling debris and only catching her at the very last second, just as her head hits the floor, was beautifully shot, incredibly tense, and heartbreaking all at the same time. Peter rushes down the web, thinking he's saved her, only to find that it's too late. In the original script, Gwen is still alive, though she's got a broken back and is hanging on by a thread (no pun intended). Her death here is more melodramatic, as she demands that Peter never give up. Peter, of course, does give up, for a little while at least. The change from script to final film was a good one this time, and proves that sometimes, less is more (a lesson we wish Webb would have learned a bit earlier in the movie).
