The Musical/Comedy film category often allows for a lot of so-called "category fraud", though this year the Globes mostly seemed to get it right. However, David. O Russell's American Hustle taking the Globe home was a democratic if rather unoriginal choice, a broad but entertaining, well acted film that was nevertheless inferior to pretty much every other film in the category. What was it up against? Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska and The Wolf of Wall Street. While I can appreciate a populist awards show like the Globes not going for Nebraska, the HPFA had three perfectly good picks there, and for my money the Globe should have gone to The Wolf of Wall Street, or failing that, Spike Jonze's Her.
