10 Awesome 2018 Movies You Probably Missed
Don't sleep on these instant cult classics.
Between traditional theatrical movie releases and the uptick in streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, it's safe to say that there's never been a better (or busier) time to be a film buff.
There are more movies released every week than anyone can conceivably keep up with, and as such it's easy for some of the better yet lesser-known gems to fall by the wayside.
None of these 10 films received much marketing or garnered a lot of attention outside of film enthusiast circles, but if you're a lover of the medium and want something counter to the weekly serving of big-budget Hollywood fare, they're all well worth your time.
10. Blindspotting
A searing directorial debut from Carlos López Estrada, this dark dramedy about a parolee (Daveed Diggs) trying to live out his final three days on parole without incident is one of the year's most potent commentaries on relations between the black community and police officers in contemporary America.
Undeniably grim yet also surprisingly hilarious and girded by terrific chemistry between Diggs and co-star Rafael Casal - who also wrote the film together - Blindspotting aims to provoke and does so with a welcome dose of righteous, gorgeously shot anger.
It doesn't care to be subtle and rightly so. Police shootings against black people are so disproportionate in the U.S. it's practically an epidemic, and Estrada's film fires that fact home with all the force of a sledgehammer.
That the film's still ludicrously entertaining despite its dark content is all the more to its credit.
