Though, to me, 2013 has seen a rather disappointing summer of movies so far - and you can see why here - it hasn't been without its great movies, and its unforgettable moments of awesome action. Even in films that largely underwhelmed, many of them did manage to dazzle us even temporarily with stunning showdowns and face-offs, even if the script couldn't quite live up to it. While it's something of a stereotype that blockbuster movies are best remembered for their style rather than substance, these 10 movies boasted unforgettable set-pieces that certainly defined this summer at the movies. So sit back, relax, and reminisce about these 10 incredible action sequences which, through their ingenuity, brutality, intensity and visual aplomb burned themselves into the collective cinematic consciousness. They may not have all been in great films, but they certainly helped elevate them no matter what...
10. The Apocalypse - This Is The End
Easily the funniest film of the year so far, This Is the End also unexpectedly features one of the most memorably entertaining set-pieces all year. It begins when Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel - playing themselves, remember - head to a convenience store (convenient because it's somehow located by the Hollywood sign) for cigarettes. Here, the Rapture begins, culminating in a cantankerous store attendant being brutally crushed to death. When they return to James Franco's house, things go from bad to worse, as a crack opens in the Earth, causing the deaths of a multitude of name actors, including Michael Cera (hilariously impaled by a street light), Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Martin Starr, Aziz Ansari, Kevin Hart, Jason Segel, and David Krumholtz. The sheer absurdity of seeing these actors be dutifully killed off in such brutal fashion was both hilarious and impossible to forget.
