10 Awesome Movies Ruined By Terrible Sequels

2. Star Wars

This section doesn't specifically reference George Lucas' original Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, but the entire "original trilogy", which remains regarded as a high-point for the sci-fi space opera, and one which George Lucas himself trampled over with not only his God-awful remastered editions of these films - including pernickty edits and an overuse of CGI - but specifically, his prequel trilogy, consisting of three vastly inferior films which tarnished the original's legacy considerably. The poor explanations for numerous elements of the original trilogy's lore, such as The Force, and an overt focus on verbose dialogues about obscure trade routes, diluted the drama, and it was only really in Lucas' third prequel, Revenge of the Sith, that the pieces fell into place, and Anakin Skywalker's destiny as Darth Vader was realised. For the most complete critique on Lucas' Star Wars prequels, it is best to check out Red Letter Media's dementedly good reviews:No matter how strong the original three are, they are in some measure overshadowed by the failure of his new trilogy, which saw considerable financial success, but ended up bemusing fans who continued to watch merely to see how Darth Vader came to be. In a sense, Lucas exploited the goodwill he earned on the original films, and proved that, really, he's not much of a director. Once Vader's origin was revealed, however, the curiosity seemed to have deflated, for an animated film made on the cheap, The Clone Wars, grossed only $68m. Lucas has teased creating a sequel trilogy, but after his last fiasco, it doesn't seem that he can be bothered. Thankfully.
