10 Awesome Movies You Might Have Missed in 2012

8. 2 Days in New York

Few of us ever expected that Julie Delpy's 2 Days in Paris (she starred, wrote and directed it) would warrant a sequel, but 2 Days in New York proved to be one of the year's most uniquely illuminating, charming films. Taking French quirkiness and smashing it into New York's more harsh honesty makes for a thought-provoking, uproariously funny drama, which sees Marion (Delpy) split up from the previous film's Jack, and now living with her new partner, Mingus (Chris Rock). It's all well and good until Marion's family comes to visit, consisting of her father Jeannot (Delpy€™s actual father, Albert), sister Rose (Alexia Landeau) and Rose€™s boyfriend Manu (Alex Nahon). Simply, all Hell breaks loose, and Mingus is left agape as he realises what he's gotten himself into. Unexpectedly, it's Rock who is the standout here, playing the everyman who guides us through the madness of Marion's family; we are firmly on his side, and he delivers a potent, memorable performance as a man whose life becomes ludicrously complicated by the appearance of his partner's family. It demonstrates the sort of restraint we didn't know Rock had, and Delpy gives him some truly meaty, dishy material to chew on. The overall themes are nothing new, but Delpy delivers them in an arresting and truly weird, enchanting manner. 2 Days in New York is available on DVD/Blu-Ray now.
