10 Awesome Recent Movies That Must Never Get Sequels
9. Game Night
Game Night is without question one of the year's strongest studio comedies: an hilarious, character-driven romp that makes the most of its killer premise and boasts unexpectedly gorgeous cinematography in the bargain.
The movie tripled its budget at the box office and is likely to perform extremely well on home video, so it certainly feels like the sort of film that studios would attempt to morph into a franchise.
History dictates that sequels to gimmicky comedy movies generally fail to recapture the magic: The Hangover Part II and Horrible Bosses 2 being especially egregious examples, while Bad Neighbours 2 might well be the exception that proves the rule.
Given the specificity of Game Night's set-up - a game night that turns into an actual crime farce - putting the cast through a similar scenario once again will likely seem lazy and creatively bankrupt, so why even bother?
Will It Happen?: Screenwriter Mark Perez has expressed an interest in "many sequels" if the opportunity arises, and honestly this one could go either way.
The box office is solid but certainly not the gangbusters figures that would see Warner Bros. fast-track a sequel, and it's possible Jason Bateman learned his lesson from getting burned on Horrible Bosses 2. If the majority of the cast doesn't return - especially Bateman and Rachel McAdams - there's no chance it happens.
We'll go with a tentative no for this one, but it wouldn't be remotely surprising if it was greenlit tomorrow.
