The only man who could pull off being in charge of a vessel this big is Darth Vader. The enormous size of the ship reinforced how the Empire sought to intimidate the galaxy into submission while happily astonishing filmgoers. Seen in both The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi, Vader's ship, Executor, was finally doomed by an especially determined Rebel pilot. Seeing that the flagship's deflectors had been disabled, this pilot steered his crippled craft straight into the Executor's bridge. Vader would have been upset by the loss of his ride, but he was too busy trying to kill or turn his son to notice. The primary purpose of this class of destroyer appears to have been "shock and awe". It was successful in its purpose.
