How do we round off the Star Wars trilogy in epic style? Epic space battle? Check. The final confrontation between Luke and his father? Check. The arrival of Vader's boss and true series villain, the Emperor? Check. Teddy bears versus storm troopers? Che... whhhhaaaat? Admittedly the Ewoks don't screw the whole movie but they do bring Return Of The Jedi down a notch or two from its predecessors. What is most frustrating about their entry into the Star Wars universe is that effectively reduce the Emperor's mightiest army to buffoons. The Empire has armour, walking tanks and a shielded fortress. Yet some furry critters with sticks and catapults managed to win? Han, Chewie, Leia and a unit of rebel soldiers may have been involved, but against the Empire they didn't really stand a chance. Perhaps it was the final marketing ploy in George Lucas's big bag of money-making tricks. Turning teddy bears into heroes. It even spanned a two season cartoon which I adored as a kid. Though at least we weren't in Jar Jar Binks territory yet... How It Should Have Ended: The rumoured original ending; wookies versus storm troopers. Chewbacca reunited with his family by freeing then from enslavement. A rebellion that is actually believable. If these were supposed to be the Emperor's elite crack troops, actually giving them an enemy with the strength to rip a storm trooper's arm would have made this a much more thrilling battle, as epic as the one raging around the death star itself.
