As documentaries go, Part of Me was never going to be The Interrupters. But taken as the Katy Perry PR machine that it is, even the most die-hard fans might struggle to swallow it. The relentlessly pink and fluffy presentation is enough to make even the most doe-eyed follower vomit, and any segments where she presents herself as lonely or vulnerable are glossed over in a flash. The supposed coverage of her divorce from Russell Brand basically boils down to her having a bit of a cry after a reporter asks "do you miss him?" Mainly though, fans, friends and family will gush about her, she'll perform a stage show that would put the entire city of Las Vegas to shame, and then fans, friends and family will gush a bit more. A critical discursive analysis of celebrity culture this is not.
