3. Kraven The Hunter

Kraven was a persistent Spider-Man villain evidently beloved by the character's creators given how many times he turns up, as well as how many of his relatives have also tangled with Spider-Man over the years.

He's a hunter with a crude but deeply-held sense of honour, whose interest in Spider-Man is primarily as a particularly dangerous and prestigious prey.

The story Kraven's Last Hunt saw the Russian big game hunter take out Spider-Man and then take on his costume and mantle, trying to prove he could be better than Spider-Man at hunting New York's criminals. The clash between the two became about what a hero really is - Spider-Man did it to help people, while Kraven did it only to prove his own superiority.

The story took Kraven from a run of the mill bad guy to a tragic and sympathetic, yet still irredeemable character whose clash with Spider-Man was a lot more than an excuse for some fisticuffs.
