I honestly don't even know where to begin with describing how horrible Les Mis turned out to be. I know I said The Sound of Music is all over the place tonally but this movie just goes so overboard that watching it fall apart as it unfolds is genuinely astounding. There is no other movie in recent memory that has been as convoluted and tiresome as this musical. The sad part is I remember seeing the promotional trailer for this film before The Master and getting really excited to see such a classic tale brought to the big screen. I think the Broadway musical is absolutely genius and one of the best that has ever existed but this film just ruins everything that is great about its source material. I know I say that a lot of other films on this list are trying too hard but Les Mis brings the overbearing nature of its story to the forefront of the screen, literally to the forefront since 75% of it is shot in an extreme close up, which makes it feel like reading a book that is written in ALL CAPS. There are so many things wrong with the movie that I'll just name the most prominent ones here for the sake of length. The idea to have every single line in the entire narrative sung is a nice idea but the execution is awful since there are large gaps of the film that should have just been spoken. The songs don't even get away clean here since the constant singing only serves to make them all sound like the same song. Hooper's direction is absolutely terrible. When he's not filming the movie in an extremely boring long shot/close up he's giving the audience a German Expressionist style angle which completely goes against the look of the film and only serves to create a jarring moment that takes the viewer out of the experience.
