10 Beloved Movie Legacies At Risk Of Being Ruined Forever
2. The Lord of the Rings
How can you top perfection? The answer is, quite simply, you can't, and that's exactly the camp in which Peter Jackson's remarkable and revolutionary Lord of the Rings trilogy resides.
Luckily for us, the spine-chilling thought of a reboot/remake hasn't crossed Hollywood's mind yet, but what has is a sequel... or prequel? It's not exactly clear where 2027's The Hunt for Gollum fits into the Middle-earth timeline, but you'd have to assume it's a prequel due to the titular character's demise at the hands of Mount Doom in 2003's The Return of the King.
What is clear is that the mastermind and orchestrator behind Sméagol/Gollum, Andy Serkis, will be donning the motion capture suit once again, as well as directing the film.
Serkis has shown himself to be a more than capable director, and you could argue that no one knows the character of Gollum better and more intimately than the actor himself, so that's a win.
Franchise favourites and original trilogy titans Sir Ian McKellen and Viggo Mortensen have both expressed interest in returning should the circumstances and context suit their respective characters. But considering how idolised and sacred The Lord of the Rings films are, shoehorning a story in and disturbing the peace feels like an almighty risk that ultimately isn't worth it in the grand scheme.
Factors such as ageing actors and a muddled timeframe contribute to this. The Hunt for Gollum would've worked once upon a time, but it feels like that ship may have ultimately sailed.
