5. Dirty Pretty Things (2002)

Long before he became a household name, Chiwetel Ejiofor delivered this staggering performance as a Nigerian immigrant who gets involved in London's seedy organ trade.

It's a premise that so frequently teases being too absurd for its own good, but Stephen Frears' (The Queen) sturdy, sympathetic direction keeps things just plausible enough to make it feel like a believable slice-of-life.

Audrey Tautou is also excellent as a prostitute working in the same hotel as Chiwetel's character, and Benedict Wong also shows up briefly as a mortuary worker.

It may fly a lot lower on the radar than most of these movies, but it's absolutely worth your time for a stonkingly good lead performance above all else.
