10 Best Body Horrors That Make You Squirm
10. American Mary
Jen and Sylvia Soska have most recently tackled another body horror in the shape of last year's reimagining of David Cronenberg's Rabid. And while the Twisted Twins did a fine job in giving a classic of yesteryear a new lick of paint, many still view their finest achievement as being 2012's American Mary.
Katharine Isabelle's Mary Mason is a desperate medical student who becomes embroiled in the underhand world of body modification. Of course, Mary is nicely compensated in a financial sense for her work, yet this story sees more and more deplorable acts being put before our protagonist.
Rather than necessarily being the victim of body modification, American Mary's central character is the person solely responsible for some truly gnarly modifications. And you don't get the nickname of Bloody Mary for nothing.
Like such similar tales, things don't turn out well for Mary Mason, with her work coming back to haunt her in a way that sees her dying in her own operating room. But still, Mary had created and crafted some true works of art by the time all was said and done in American Mary.
Most striking about this movie, is the realisation that people like Mary Mason are out there in the real world, performing similar acts at a price for some nefarious sorts.
