7. We Need To Talk About Kevin

BBC Films

A mesmerising psychological thriller in the vein of Stanley Kubrick, this adaptation of Lionel Shriver's acclaimed novel refuses to settle for easy answers as it probes quite what caused the titular young boy to perform an horrific act of violence.

Ezra Miller shot to fame for his fantastic performance as Kevin, but Tilda Swinton gives the movie's most astonishing turn as his put-upon mother, having to come to terms with her son's behaviour and how society at large seems to blame her. That she wasn't nominated for a Best Actress Oscar is, honestly, disgraceful.

Lynne Ramsay's direction walks a fine razor's edge between surreal and observational, but it's always extremely unsettling and drips with uneasy atmosphere throughout.

It may be too unpleasant, challenging and ambiguous for some tastes, but the film's brutal emotional power is undeniable.
