9. Open Water 2: Adrift Has Nothing To Do With Open Water

The first Open Water was an instant classic, a based-on-truth thriller that made commendably good use of its modest budget. It's not like the production had to spend a lot on locations, casting, or anything else for that matter: almost the whole of the 79-minute film has its cameras set on a scuba-diving couple who find themselves abandoned in the ocean, menaced by sharks, exhaustion and starvation. It's a gripping, well-told suspense film loosely based on the true story of an American couple in a similar sticky situation. It got good reviews and a heck of a lot of hype, which is why when a German film company was making a similar cast-adrift drama, they decided to just slap the Open Water name on it, good sense be damned! Open Water 2: Adrift is a sequel in name only, taking a totally unrelated film about a bunch of idiots on a party boat who go for a swim only to find themselves unable to get back on the boat and trying to cash in on the previous success. Originally simply called "Adrift", the Open Water name was appended to boost ticket sales. And, to be fair, it sort of worked. Didn't help the film much quality-wise, though.
