10 Best Horror Movies Of 2025 (So Far)

2. The Ugly Stepsister

As Disney continues their industrious effort to remake all of their most beloved classic animated films in live-action form, there's something enormously refreshing about The Ugly Stepsister - a deeply disturbing body horror take on Cinderella which draws its cues from the Brothers Grimm's version of the story, "Aschenputtel."

In a stunning directorial debut, Emilie Blichfeldt demonstrates a masterful command of tone as she offers a revisionist take of the Cinderella fairy tale, unfolding here from the perspective of her "ugly" stepsister Elvira (a brilliant Lea Myren).

Blichfeldt nimbly threads a tricky needle, offering up a horror film packed to the gills with squirm-inducing body modification, yet never at the expense of character development or potent social commentary.

This is a film just as interested in the interior lives of its female characters as their exteriors, all while illustrating the still-prevalent tendency for society to pit women against one another in competition.

In another reality lead actress Lea Myren would land herself in the awards conversation for her sublime work, but given how infrequently the Academy recognises horror performances at all - The Substance being a major exception - it'll simply join the list of infuriating snubs.
