Watching horror movies with friends can be great and everything, but sometimes it's just nice to grab a snack, bundle up in your blanket, and sit yourself down with your favourite spooky flick.

Now, you'd think this would be a perfect opportunity for more subdued scares as you're completely alone, which it is, and several of the entries on this list fall under that category. But it's just as good of a chance to watch something truly terrifying.

When you watch movies with other people there's a sense of comfort and safety, making even some of the scariest movies lose their effect. If you want to be scared - like paranoid at bedtime kind of scared - it needs to be just you and the screen. Plus, other people can easily be unnecessarily distracting with snark or sarcasm, especially when it comes to older horror or slow burns.

Basically, if you want to enjoy the horror experience and not risk turning things into a Mystery Science 3000 type of gathering, a solo sit-down is the way to go.

With all that said and done, it's time to turn the lights down low and dive into ten of the best horror movies to watch alone.

10. Nosferatu

We're going old school with this first entry.

F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent classic is essential viewing for any self-described horror fan. It's also a pretty darn great flick too.

The plot is pretty simple. Man goes to a creepy castle, meets an even creepier dude who turns out to be a vampire, and then bad things start to happen.

There's really just one reason why Nosferatu is best watched alone, and that's because it isn't really the type of movie you watch with a group. It's a silent film, and because of that it makes the temptation to fill that silence a little less difficult to give into.

When you watch it by yourself without any distractions, you're able to more smoothly get on its brooding wavelength. Plus, since it's a classic and everything, solo viewing will also help you be able to appreciate it as a work of art too.
