What makes Harry Lockhart such an interesting Private Detective figure, again, is that he's not really a Private Detective. Based on the narrative structure of several Raymond Chandler novels, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is about a NYC thief accidentally turned Hollywood actor who finds himself in Los Angeles and up for the role of a P.I.. He's paired with real-life investigator Gay Perry (Val Kilmer) for training when he unwittingly stumbles on a plot of murder and corruption. The role is notable for being a return to form for Robert Downey Jr., who'd spent the earlier half of the decade mired in scandal. His unique blend of neurotic confidence gives Harry Lockhart a pulse and makes the absurd story wholly believable.
