It's easy to forget just how important movie soundtracks are. Praise is heaped on actors, directors, cinematographers, costume designers...visual elements are much nearer to the surface of our consciousness, instantly recognizable for their quality.

But soundtracks play a substantial role in the making of a great film. Music is primarily used to manipulate emotion €“ whether that's making a sad scene more heartbreaking or an action sequence more heart-pounding. How many of us would remember the docking scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey if not for the gorgeous Strauss score? The melancholic pool scene in The Graduate, held together by Simon And Garfunkel's Sound Of Silence? Or even Shaun Of The Dead's zombie-splatting bar fight coupled with Queen's Don't Stop Me Now?
