Director/screenwriter Alex Proyas Dark City is indeed dark, and its surreal as well, reminiscent in mood to Proyas The Crow from 1994. The highly stylized art direction reminds me a little of Brazil and City of Lost Children. A man (Rufus Sewell) awakens to find himself as a murder suspect with amnesia in a bizarre dystopian society where it is forever nighttime. A surreal place where sinister beings seem to be able to manipulate matter and time. Dark City is one of those things are not what they seem movies which has cracks in its reality which feed a steady and methodical momentum to a climax wherein (without revealing too much) all is revealed. Kiefer Sutherland, William Hurt, Jennifer Connelly and Ian Richardson round out the excellent cast. If you missed this one, and you probably did, it will be worth checking out on HBO or videocassette when its released.
