10 Best Political Movies Of All Time
4. In The Loop
When one thinks of a political film, very few times does one think of comedy. But that's just what we got with Armando Iannucci's In The Loop.
For those already familiar with his masterwork on TV's The Thick Of It, Iannucci decided to bring his political musings to the big screen, along with the Velociraptor of politics himself, Peter Capaldi's Malcolm Tucker.
The film centres around the legality of the Iraq war and how the UK and US worked to make the war possible in their own governments. It features some of the best and sharpest dialogue ever written in a political film, with the obligatory truck full of swear words for Tucker's own brand of language.
Though it is void of any dark troupes and clichés that usually permeate these films, it does feature the tension that political dramas usually exert. Mostly from Tom Hollander's Simon Foster, who can never seem to get out of Malcolm's thumb.
The performances are right on the money, though a few were disappointed that Iannucci chose not to bring back the more well-known characters of Ollie Reader and Glenn Cullen from The Thick Of It. Instead, he recast Chris Addison and James Smith in different roles.
The real heavyweight performances here though belong to the dearly departed James Gandolfini and the returning king of spin, Peter Capaldi's Malcolm Tucker. Together they spar and conspire behind the backs of just about everybody, which brings about one of the most hilarious films made in the past 20 years.
