In the scene that made men across the world cringe, Le Chiffre shows just how far he will go to get his money. Desperate to stave off the criminals hes stolen from, Le Chiffre aims to get Bond to give up the poker winnings by any means possible, which, in this case, means whacking his nether regions with a thickly knotted rope.
It speaks to the reinvention and evolution of the series. Fun as they may be, theres no room for lasers slowly working their way up to Bond, or alligator pits to be pushed towards. The torture is realistic, simple, and believably effective.
But just as it characterizes Le Chiffres ruthlessness, this scene surprisingly shows off Bonds funnier side. Though audiences may still be lurching from the imagined pain, its hard not to laugh along with Bond as he taunts Le Chiffre, asking him to scratch his itch down there. It reminds us why we like Bond and proves yet again why hes such a valuable field asset.
