Ever since Stanley Kubrick detailed the dawn of man in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1967) and Ridley Scott scared the hell out of everyone with Alien (1979), sci-fi films have only grown more popular and daring in recent years. They have also grown more accessible with the rise of streaming services.

From daring assessments of humanism and politics to relentless action-thrillers and iconic comedies, this list will take a look at the best sci-fi movies that streaming giant Netflix currently has to offer. Regardless of whether you're after a thoughtful drama or family friendly adventure, it's safe to say Netflix has you covered.

With that in mind, from the maddeningly underrated to the all-time classics, here are the 10 best sci-fi movies on Netflix waiting for your enjoyment.

10. I Am Mother (2019)

I Am Mother treads a perfect line between unsettling and philosophical. In a strange dystopian future, a girl known only as Daughter (Clara Rugaard) is cared for by a maternal robot called Mother (Rose Byrne). The outside world is dead, and Daughter is alone with zero human contact until an apocalypse survivor (Hillary Swank) enters the picture and flips her world upside down.

The sci-fi drama works first and foremost as an exercise in suspense. Most modern sci-fi films fall down with their predictability and lack of daring, but I Am Mother salutes its inspirations whilst also revelling in its own clear-cut identity.

From the top draw performances of Rugaard and Swank - and a compelling vocal turn from Rose Byrne - to the genuinely unpredictable and frightening conclusion, I Am Mother is one of Netflix's most unfairly hidden sci-fi gems, and deserves to be dug up.
