10 Best Slasher Horror Movie Remakes Of All Time
5. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
When writer and director Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist) unleashed The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), he changed the horror scene forever. He created the most violent and realistic slasher movie audiences had seen at the time, a deeply dark film which was seeped in controversy and a disturbing and difficult watch for many. Inspired by the true crime events of serial killer Ed Gein, a cannibal who skinned his victims to create masks and other grotesque objects, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre introduced us to the demented powertool-wielding Leatherface, one of cinema’s most horrifying maniacs.
Producer Michael Bay (Armageddon) rebooted the classic film in 2003 with director Marcus Nispel (Friday The 13th) at the helm, and a stylish young cast including Jessica Biel (Total Recall). The remake enhances the backstory, as five unsuspecting young adults see their road trip take an unimaginably dark turn, with a catastrophic chain of events which starts with them helping a distressed female that they almost hit on the road. This opening scene culminates in them stumbling across the residence of Leatherface and his horrifyingly sick and twisted family.
The remake pays homage to many of the original movie's key scenes, whilst also writing in many new scenes and story arcs, bringing a fresh feel to the story which enhances the viewing experience. But like its predecessor, this remains one slasher film that is certainly not for the faint-hearted.
