Starring Karen Gillan as the lead, the former Amy Pond delivers a solid performance in the film. Her chemistry with her brothers is believable and manages to ground the feature. The sequences that take place in the past are the meaty horror aspects that audiences know Flanagan for. His shooting style allows for some great moments of dread and threat.

Oculus features an intriguing story, all revolving around a cursed mirror and the death of the lead’s parents. Looking back on the film, it is easy to see how Flanagan created Hill House and Bly Manor. This was where he developed his storytelling skills, and he did it masterfully.
