10 Big Questions From The Fantastic Four Trailer

Isn't this a comic book film?

Even when the cast was announced for the new Fantastic Four movie, everyone was probably too distracted by those awful memories of intergalactic methane cloud monsters and elasticated dance offs to take it all seriously, particularly as nobody seems able to get Spider-Man right at the minute (and he's a far more bankable property). But the Fantastic Four deserves to be made: in the grand scheme of things, the super team is pretty much the Marvel Royal Family, and their mistreatment on screen is nothing short of a travesty. Forget the Avengers, and every other team brought together to fight mounting evil, the Fantastic Four are the first family of the superhero world, and it's about time someone stepped up to the plate to take the source, and its enduring popularity seriously. Clearly, that manifesto was a big part of how Chronicle director Josh Trank approached his adaptation, because the first trailer is notably restrained compared to the more pulpy, cartoonish vision that derailed the characters as a viable property in the first place. And despite the muted reaction, the trailer is actually pretty damn good: it's big on teasing, focusing mostly on origin issues, but there is something about it that is far more cool than you'd probably ever accuse the Fantastic Four of. And the hints it offers open up a series of very pertinent questions about how the film is going to play out...
