Over the Labor Day weekend, Dreamworks Animation's How To Train Your Dragon 2 crossed $600 million at the global box office, effectively becoming the highest-grossing animated film of the year. That celebration was cut short, however, as the studio quickly announced that its sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 3, has been delayed. The film will hit theaters a year later than expected. Originally slated for June 17, 2016, HTTYD 3 will now fly into cinema screens on June 9, 2017. Dreamworks didn't cite a reason for the change, though a battle with Pixar likely factored heavily into the decision. HTTYD 3 was not alone on its original 2016 date, as Disney/Pixar's Finding Dory is slated for the same day. HTTYD 2 may have made an impressive $600 million, but it doesn't hold a candle to the $936 million that Finding Nemo brought in in 2003. That makes HTTYD 3's chances of besting Finding Dory at the box office highly unlikely. That doesn't necessarily constitute a year-long delay, however, so maybe there are other factors at play. In any case, HTTYD 3 still faces a release date battle in 2017, as it arrives a week after The LEGO Movie sequel and just a week before an Untitled Pixar film. Despite the delay, writer/director Dean DeBlois and the film's cast, including Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera, are expected to return.
