Martin Scorsese's knowledge of cinema is so vast, if IMDb were to suddenly break down, he'd easily do as a live-action replacement. So when Scorsese opens his mouth about what he thinks the greatest films of all time are, it's probably for the best that you listen. Scorsese has made a good number of movie lists down the years; in addition to offering up his own personal favourite list of 12 (The Red Shoes and Vertigo featured among them), in 2012 Scorsese made a list of 85 films everyone should see to "know anything about film". Exorcist II: The Heretic wasn't featured among those, but you better believe Scorsese is a fan. "I like the first Exorcist...but The Heretic surpasses it", Scorz said of John Boorman's oft-derided sequel in a 1998 edition of Film Comment. It's not an opinion held by many, but director Boorman should get a confidence boost out of it, considering he himself admitted it wasn't his finest hour, after the film allegedly opened to "riots".
