5. Hugh Grant Replaces Craig Charles In The Red Dwarf Movie
The idea of a Red Dwarf film has been floating around for decades, and co-creator Doug Naylor got far enough through negotiations that some concept art had even been drawn up of a red hover-Ferrari. Naylor had conducted meetings with American production companies about getting the movie made, and they came up with a horrifying suggestion they thought would get it done much easier. That's right, they wanted Hugh Grant to replace Craig Charles as Dave Lister, the curry-slurping, dreadlock-clad slob we all know and love because he is obviously far better known in international markets, whereas Charles is pretty much known by nobody outside of the UK. As a huge fan of the show, I'm glad Naylor had the sense not to do it, but at the same time, I would have been curious to see how Hugh Grant could have pulled off such a ludicrously ill-suited role.
