10 CGI Scenes So Good You Think They're Real

8. Kevin Costner's Hair - Waterworld

Here€™s an instance where CGI did little to help a film, and in fact probably only hindered it, helping it trundle towards a $175m budget and hilariously catastrophic box office failure all at the same time. Kevin Costner€™s much-maligned epic is famed for its costly CGI landscapes, but the effect you might not know about is the (admittedly impeccable) work done on Kevin Costner€™s hair, because he was starting to lose it. Not only did Costner€™s raging vanity result in director Kevin Reynolds getting the boot from the film, but it meant that the effects house in charge of the film had to perform effects tweaks to paint over his emerging baldness, alongside reshoots Costner demanded. If anything, we like to think that the film€™s tremendous failure was a little bit of karmic justice for Costner making such an absurdly self-involved request.
