10 Classic Movies That Taught Us Terrible Lessons

6. Crash

(Lesson: Following the Flock Is No Fun) Cronenberg's movies are filled with little lessons about life. In this movie about people who break the boredom in their lives by having sex in cars during real and imagined car crashes, living on the margins is the name of the game. Believe it or not, this is a good thing. If Cronenberg, and J. G. Ballard who wrote the novel, were prophets, then the lesson here would be that most people never live out their fantasies. The car crash is a metaphor for an event in live that jolts you out of your revery and gets you paying attention what's really real. William S. Burroughs once said that the definition of "naked lunch" is the moment you realize what's really on the end of your fork, and that's what Crash is really all about. Just instead of forks puncturing food, it's cars crushing bodies. But there's pleasure in the pain of life's many banalities, according to the school of Cronenberg. But wait a second ... why is this a "terrible" lesson? It's because most of us stay trapped in a world of the same without ever exploring our true desires. Like most good art, Crash is your call to live differently. Just don't hurt, maim or go against anyone's consent, okay?
