6. The Incredibles

Ratatouille/Tomorrowland shot-caller Brad Bird was responsible for Disney's family-focused, suited-and-booted spectacular in 2004. Taking a simple idea and running with it, the retro-styled CG romp featured a brood of bad guy bashers, from square-jawed Dad (Mr Incredible) to infant powerhouse Jack-Jack. Super-strength, super-speed, super-invisibility and elasticity... all the boxes were ticked in an adventure that pitched them against evil hoodwinker Syndrome. If anyone was going to give the studio a box office comic book colossus it was Pixar. Bird managed to give the Comic-Con crowd a knowing wink whilst crafting characters who were both derivative yet convincing in their own right. Well-designed and genuinely thrilling, the smooth animation pushed the excitement to new heights. The voice cast were perfectly-selected. Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson (his second appearance on the list), Jason Lee and ubiquitous Pixar choice John Ratzenberger were present and correct. A sequel is smashing into cinemas in 2019.
