Ari Aster is quick becoming infamous for his annual over-stuffed horror masterpieces, with both Hereditary and Midsommar being filled with minor moments which seem insignificant at first glance but later serve as gruesome foreshadowing of their doomed characters’ eventual fates.
Hell, we even featured the second flick as another entry in this very list!
For his feature debut, though, Aster truly took things up a notch when it came time to hide some subtle scares in the background of every scene. He couldn’t be content with those low-lit, almost subliminal momentary shots which reveal nude cult members staking out the family home late in the film.
Before this, the helmer also added wisps of CGI steam outside the protagonist’s window as he sleeps in an earlier scene. So what?
So, this little detail tips us off to the fact that there’s someone is sitting outside his window, a shadowy figure watching his every move, ensuring the plan is going off without a hitch, thus foreshadowing the cult’s control of his family, and - yeah you know what, that’s enough for this one.
