4. The Babysitter

McG has never been a critical darling throughout his career, but the Charlie Angels’ helmer had a rare hit with audiences in the form of 2017’s Netflix production The Babysitter, a funny, bizarre teen comedy-cum-occult horror hybrid which fused the two unexpected genres with surprising grace and plenty of the director’s trademark visual style.

The film benefited from a brilliant central turn from future Ready or Not star Samara Weaving and some hilarious supporting work from The Duff’s Robbie Amell and Wet Hot American Summer’s Ken Marino, but nonetheless critics panned the flick, complaining that its attempts at humour were woeful whilst the horror elements were non-existent.

Given the praise heaped on similar gory-but-feelgood horror comedy hits like Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil, it seems possible that reflexive hate for McG may have been enough to turn critics away from The Babysitter. In any case, it’s their loss if the reviewers end up missing out on a charming, fast-paced comedy with some stellar gore and tense, but nonetheless hilarious and inventive chase sequences.
