There's something to be said for sticking to what you know; some filmmakers clearly know what they're good at, and have made a pretty consistent living in that stead. It has to be said, though, that as viewers, this gets a little bit boring; when you see a trailer from one of these directors, you know exactly what you're getting, and they never really seem to take any risks. While gambles can of course result in cataclysmic artistic failure - which, when you're dealing with potentially hundreds of millions of dollars, isn't exactly an enviable position - wouldn't we all like to see these directors try something radically different for their next film? Here are 10 directors who always make the same movie...
10. Michael Bay
The Movie: The Overblown Action Spectacle With Gorgeous Visuals And Lame Comic Relief We start off with one of the best examples of a director who never changes his stripes; every single movie the guy has made has adhered to the same schematic - a loud, over-the-top action film that's visually accomplished but lacking in brains, with comic relief ranges from passably amusing to downright infuriating (Sam Witwicky's parents in Transformers, for one). While Bay can craft a thrilling set-piece from time to time and his films always look nice (though the smattering of CGI metal just gets confusing and tired after a while), I've always thought that if he actually accepted a script from someone who can actually write, he might have a genuinely great film on his hands. His latest film, Pain & Gain, actually has a few hilarious gags in the trailer, so who knows - maybe this will be the turning over of a new leaf (before Bay returns to direct Transformers 4, of course).
