Like many on this list, age vs. youth seems to affect the greats. With Ridley Scott, here is another victim of his own choices in the latter stages of his career. An Alien prequel based in the same world with similar characters? No, lets focus a bit more on a new story that we know will feel rushed and contrived. Maybe a more serious take on the Robin Hood story, going against the mega successful tongue in cheek iterations we have seen before? Why not. With only a few good films to speak of, American Gangster for example, Scott has churned out some rather average to poor films of late. No matter how good you may perceive American Gangster, Prometheus, or any other later films from his stock to be, he will never top what he did in his early career with Alien or Blade Runner. Herein lies the issue with Scott - his early films where groundbreaking, genre defining pictures and it's been impossible to maintain those standards throughout his career, which gives the impression that his later work is him coasting along happily. Ridley Scott helped shaped the Sci-Fi genre into what it is today, and it's a shame to see that his return to said genre is lacking the success he helped create. A victim of circumstance, very much bad timing and incorrect choices and like many greats on this list, he appears through gritted teeth. For Ridley, what he does in life, echoes in eternity...Fortunately his early work is so good, we will probably turn a blind eye to his later stuff.
