Ghoulies is a cult classic that, some say, cheated in getting its status. Riding on the success of Gremlins, Ghoulies (originally titled Beasties) marketed its pint-sized monster terrors as the focal point of the film. In reality, the diminutive creatures were nothing more than mere props and held no actual weight to the story... which actually revolved around the occult, black magic, and the idiocy of the 1980s. In the film, Jonathan Graves (Peter Liapis) inherits his parents' vacant house and moves in with his girlfriend. The couple brings a group of their friends in tow (one of which is Mariska Hargitay of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit fame) to celebrate and party. Jonathan is completely unaware that his deceased parents were Satanists and that his father (Malcolm, played by Michael Des Barres) tried to sacrifice him to Lucifer. Upon discovering his father's old books, Jonathan's interest in wielding the dark arts begins to bloom and soon he inadvertently resurrects his father and the Ghoulies that do his bidding.When Malcolm comes to life, he instructs the Ghoulies to murder Jonathan's friends and then takes on the appearance of a woman in order to seduce Jonathan's friend Dick (Keith Joe Dick), who meets his end when Malcolm - in female form - uses an elongated tongue to choke out and cut through his throat.
