The latest film from Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) may seem like a far cry from his prior works, but if anyone can make a Best Picture-caliber heist thriller, it's probably him.
McQueen is an incredible actors' director, and he's amassed an absolutely ludicrous cast including Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, Liam Neeson, Jon Bernthal, Colin Farrell, Daniel Kaluuya, Carrie Coon, Jacki Weaver, Robert Duvall, André Holland and Lukas Haas. Phew.
The trailer suggests an entrancingly gritty heist flick with a distinctly feminist flavour, which alone should help it stand out from other seemingly similar crime thrillers.
The Academy is pretty hot-and-cold on McQueen's works, but with decidedly less-controversial subject matter than either Hunger or Shame, they'll probably bite here if the movie's good enough.
