The reaction from many people to the trailer for Ghostbusters is another great example of just how easy it is to mock remakes and reboots. With fans having such a clear idea of what is at stake, picking faults can be like shooting fish in a barrel. Some filmmakers, however, are taking a different approach to our favourite genre movies of the past and choosing not to remake specific films, but tackle genres in a broader sense. Instead of bringing to mind specific scenes, these films evoke something deeper and more rooted in nostalgia, of times spent in video rental stores as children or watching late night horror movies on TV without our parents knowing. Sometimes retro genre movies deliver this nostalgia with a wink and a nod, aware of their own referential nature witha sense of post-modern irony, while others take themselves deadly seriously and strive for a completely authentic look and feel.
