More than most genre movies, Blaxploitation films are firmly rooted in a specific era - they're as indicative of the 1970s as the flares and Afros sported by many of the characters they feature, or the funk and soul classics which play out on the soundtrack. While plenty of more recent movies have thrown in the occasional nod and wink to Blaxploitation, none embrace the trappings of the genre with quite as much enthusiasm and flair as Black Dynamite. A pet project for its star Michael Jai White, Black Dynamite captures the essence of the genre, with its questionable sexual politics, love of martial arts and slipshod filmmaking in which boom mics are visible and continuity isn't always up to scratch. Fans of Blaxploitation classics will have a field day with the countless references, but with its frantic pace and onslaught of jokes Black Dynamite is a gratuitously funny comedy in its own right.
