10 Film Characters Who Inexplicably Shrugged Off Fatal Injuries

By Edward Owen /

10. Cloverfield €“ Beth

I€™m not a doctor, so I€™m not quite sure what qualifies as a mortal injury. However, I do possess the same logical faculties as any other human being on this planet, and occasionally, some injuries don€™t sit right with me. Case in point, Beth from Cloverfield. Much of Cloverfield€™s plot is derived from main character Rob€™s quest to save his girlfriend Beth after the monster has attacked New York, and that€™s ok. It€™s one way of establishing plot in the monster-goes-mental-in-a-sandbox genre, so I can get behind it, even if Rob appears to have a death wish at times. Yet it€™s when they discover Beth €“ in her absolutely ruined building €“ that the whole thing raises eyebrows. When they first stumble across her, it€™s a pretty safe bet that she€™s dead €“ she€™s been impaled through the shoulder, she€™s lost consciousness and she€™s been there a long time. Yet apparently, she can shake that off like a trooper. Not only do they pry her free of the bar, she€™s then able to scale across to a separate roof, go down over 30 storeys of stairs and pretty much act the same as a regular character throughout. I don€™t think I need to point out how bizarre this is €“ the woman€™s got a damned hole at least the size of a pool ball running through her shoulder. I don€™t care if it€™s not going through her vital organs, there€™s no way in hell that she can treat this as a flesh wound. Yet she totally does, gallivanting through the ruins of New York like it isn€™t even a thing and later survives a helicopter crash. This woman€™s more durable than the Terminator, and it makes no sense at all.
