10 Filmmakers EMBARRASSED By Their Own Movies

2. David Lynch - Dune

David Lynch is one of the best directors in American history, this is indisputable. Whether it's Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, or any other entry in his extensive filmography, the director isn't always understood, but there is an undeniable craft and passion behind every movie he makes.

But with that being said, why anyone thought attaching the infamously offbeat surrealist director to adapt Frank Herbert's science fiction masterpiece Dune is beyond anyone's, including his, understanding. Nowadays, Lynch would rather just pretend that the movie never happened at all.

Which would work just fine with Universal, who meddled with the film from start to finish, refused him final cut privileges, and even listed the famous pen name Alan Smithee under the director credit in some cuts of the movie. Making this movie was a nightmare for all involved, Lynch in particular, who refuses to so much as acknowledge this movie exists whenever he's asked about it in interviews.

It's unclear whether his unsullied version of Dune would have actually been a good adaptation of the book. It's definitely possible, given that Dune was a pretty bug nutty series in its own right. Maybe Lynch would have had better luck with the sequels.
