10 Films For People Who Hate Fantasy
10. Hook
A sequel to a movie that doesn't exist, Hook finds a magnificent new way to tell Peter Pan's story. Robin Williams's incredible performance paired with practical effects and sets are brilliant. What separates this Pan tale from others is its ability to take a children's story and make it accessible for the entire family.
In its accessibility, we find it's not heavy in lore, nor is it devoid of it. Under Steven Spielberg's direction, we see a grown-up Peter Pan who's forgotten his childhood as the flying, pirate fighting, lost boy. The loss of childlike innocence is something a lot of adults can understand. Hook offers a glimpse into why it's essential to have that kind of joy in your life.
The movie shows that as adults, we can't solely focus on our careers and responsibilities. It's essential to be able to enjoy life. We see this struggle, not only in Peter Pan but with the ageing Captain Hook. The Captain kidnaps Peter's kids solely to relive an old war.
The reason why fantasy haters will love this movie is that it addresses the very thing they detest. It's okay to have some nonsensical fun.
