The 1980s were a great decade for cinema. Not in terms of poignant drama, Oscar winning performances and paradigm-shifting screenplays here, though. Think more fast cars, big explosions, big hair, big guns, sunglasses, synth, guitar solos and Michael J. Fox skateboarding behind a pickup truck to Huey Lewis And The News. There was a certain sense of adventure, excitement and fun that you just dont find as much in modern movies. After a while the excess of the '80s had just had its day and much of what made it great became regarded as over the top and cheesy. However, there are still loads of great films from the decade that have stood the test of time and avoid being tarred with the '80s cheese brush. Or they don't avoid it but they're just too good to care. Among the ten years that make up the 1980s, one of them stands out in cinema, and that year is 1984. Three of the top ten grossing films throughout the entire decade were released during this year after all. But it's not all about how much money a movie makes. Just because a movie makes a great return at the box office doesn't make it a good film (just look at the Transformers movies). The following films speak for themselves, however. Over 30 years on, they have all become legendary classics. Advance Warning: The following list does not contain Footloose. Sorry.
